"...These MAGA bullies want to create a world where families are afraid to send their kids to school and where they turn our neighbors into our enemies."
TIRRC Votes Condemns the Return of HB793 and Continues to Demand Education for ALL Students
NASHVILLE—HB793, Tennessee Republicans' attempt to kick children out of public schools based on who they are and where they come from, has been placed on the calendar for a vote on Wednesday, March 4 in the House Finance Subcommittee after stalling during the 2025 legislative season. HB1711, which mandates tracking immigrant students in schools across the state is also scheduled to be heard in the House State and Local Committee the same day. As these extreme lawmakers continue their crusade against innocent children, TIRRC Votes released the following statement:
“It doesn’t matter where our kids were born, which part of the state they live in, or how much money their parents make, all Tennessee children deserve to attend public school without fear of harassment, intimidation, or discrimination.
Yet these MAGA bullies want to create a world where families are afraid to send their kids to school and where they turn our neighbors into our enemies. They are trying to force their divisive vision of Tennessee on all of us.
But we see past their claims and can see what their agenda is really about, dividing us while they refuse to fully fund our public schools or enact policies that help us build a good life for our families. Tennesseans are more opposed than ever to their harmful policies that target our children, standing up and speaking out in support of their immigrant neighbors and declaring that education is for all and all children deserve the freedom to learn, no exceptions.

TIRRC Votes was launched in 2018 to strengthen and expand our democracy by building power in immigrant and refugee communities and advocating for equitable and inclusive public policy. One of the leading organizations in Tennessee capable of building a new electorate and mobilizing the state's progressive base voters, they are a model for effective, immigrant-led political organizations in the Southeast. Outside of elections, TIRRC Votes is leading the way at the local and state level in policy advocacy, defeating dozens of anti-immigrant and anti-refugee bills each year at the state legislature and casting a new narrative about who gets to be a Tennessean. TIRRC Votes is affiliated with the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC).
